Always never dug this tune until one afternoon I understood the simple joy of just giving in, to both Women and this song - This is the version that keyed me straight and I adore this second set Box Or Rain>Cold Rain and Snow>Women are Smarter - Jerry's leads at the end of Smarter are dancing and jumping and happy and everything a good dance song should be. Sure, half the time I thought they were going into Iko, but then Iko got overplayed so often in the 80's it lost its street cred - Harry Belefonte was Right! Puts a smile on my face everytime!

Good call Capt.
The transition into Eyes is sweet!!

Jerry playing the eyes riff while still singing the chorus to Women Are Smarter is really cool.

I always loved this song more than Iko-Iko actually. Great fun party groove but with everything that's enjoyable about irony.

Best part is one of the reviews. "the women are smarter is flawless. I was at this show and I slept under a tree"

ha! love that review. brief and to the point.

as for the tune- nothing special, but i always kinda liked it. a simple little two chord ditty with a bouncy caribbean feel, a femme-positive message, and plenty of room for jerry to flow melodically on top. fun times.

this one isn't as rocking as some of the '82 versions, but the solos are real nice in a laid back almost jazzy kinda way. good melodies, good comping, and pretty nice sound too. and, incidentally, i know this show well because it was my very first gd "bootleg". it would have been my first show had it not been on a school night but, alas, 8th grade me had to stay home and tape it off the radio instead of going with my friends. oh well....

"femme-positive message".

Funny how covering a song can change it's meaning...

Agreed.

"Methusaleh spent all his life in tears
Lived without a woman for 900 years
One day he decided to have some fun
The poor man never lived to see 900 and one"

I first heard the tune in the Robert Palmer version, which is a great album (basically a Little Feat album).

How's this for a take on it?

That was a bit surreal . Like the advanced chirography and lip syncing . Is her bro super creepy , or is it just me ?

even with the lyrics changed or some omitted how is this necessarily a positive comment on women? To me the whole point of the song is pretty much the same exact thing that Frank says in the famous poodle lecture. Take it away Frank:

" The WO-MAN has always been much smarter than the MAN, you know this is true.
And so it was since the beginning of time. The MAN would do anything to get
some pussy. And that's why the WO-MAN always had control over him."
